The difference traces back to two traditions:
- Abrahamic tradition: The Sabbath (day of rest) is the last day of the week — Saturday in Judaism, Sunday in Christianity. This makes Sunday the "first" day of the new week in religious calendars, which influenced US and Latin American calendars.
- ISO 8601 / European tradition: The international standard defines Monday as day 1 and Sunday as day 7, reflecting the secular work week pattern common in Europe.
