UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks. It replaced GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) as the international standard in 1972. UTC does not observe daylight saving time — it is a constant reference point.

Daylight Saving Time (DST)
DST shifts clocks forward 1 hour in spring and back in autumn. About 70 countries observe DST. The USA, Canada, and most of Europe use DST; most of Asia, Africa, and South America do not.
The Date Line and UTC+14
UTC+14:00 is the furthest ahead. Kiritimati (Christmas Island, Kiribati) was placed at UTC+14 so the entire country shares the same calendar date. The International Date Line runs roughly along the 180° meridian but bends to keep countries on the same side.
FAQ
How many time zones are there in the world?
There are 38 standard UTC offsets, ranging from UTC−12 to UTC+14. The USA alone spans 6 time zones (not counting territories).
What time zone is UTC?
UTC is the reference — it has no offset. It is equivalent to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) for most practical purposes.
Which country has the most time zones?
France has the most time zones of any country — 12 — because it includes overseas territories across multiple UTC offsets.
Why does India have a 30-minute offset (UTC+5:30)?
India chose UTC+5:30 as a political compromise to use a single time zone for the entire country while minimizing the deviation from solar time for most of the population.
